What BooksFundr Was

BooksFundr was India’s first crowd-funding platform for books. Authors created campaigns, sold pre-orders, and books that met pre-order goals were published by White Falcon Publishing for free under one of our publishing plans. Authors earned 100% profit share for all books sold over and above the pre-order goals.

It was also a meeting point for authors and readers: readers supported books they wanted to see published by buying pre-orders. Through our distribution network, published titles could be sold in markets such as the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark and Australia, and in India on major ecommerce platforms including Amazon.in, Flipkart and others.

How It Worked

For reference only. New campaigns are not accepted.

Authors submitted book details, a sample chapter or synopsis, book description, author biography and related material. We reviewed campaigns and made them live. By default each campaign ran for 60 days. Authors promoted campaigns to their audience through social media, email and other channels. Readers showed interest by purchasing pre-orders. Books that met pre-order goals had proven demand, and we published them for free.

  • Create a campaign with manuscript details and samples
  • Readers pre-order to show interest in the title
  • Meet the goal and we published under a free plan
  • 100% profit share on sales above the pre-order goal

Frequently Asked Questions

How the retired platform worked, for historical context.

What is BooksFundr?

BooksFundr was India’s first crowd-funding platform for books. Authors created campaigns and sold pre-orders. Books that met pre-order goals were published by White Falcon Publishing without any upfront costs to the author.

How did BooksFundr work?

Authors created a campaign by submitting book details, a sample chapter or synopsis, book description, author biography and other details. We reviewed campaigns and made them live. By default each campaign ran for 60 days. Authors promoted campaigns to their audience. Readers purchased pre-orders. Books that met the pre-order goals were published for free.

What happened when a campaign met the pre-order goal?

We sent a formal offer and agreement to the author to publish the book. We provided design, editing, marketing and distribution services without any upfront cost to the author.

What happened when a campaign did not meet the pre-order goal?

For campaigns that failed to meet the pre-order goals, all pre-orders were cancelled and readers were refunded the full amount. Alternatively, if an author wished to purchase the balance pre-orders, we could still publish the book.

How was BooksFundr different from other crowd-funding platforms?

Other platforms let people raise funds for almost any product, and successful authors still had to arrange publishing, marketing and distribution themselves. BooksFundr was designed specifically for books, and White Falcon Publishing handled those publishing tasks after a successful campaign.

Did authors earn royalty on pre-orders?

Authors earned 100% profit share for all books sold over and above the pre-order goals.

What scenarios could an author face on a campaign?

Assume a book of about 200 pages, with pre-order goals of 100 for Starter and 200 for Regular.

Scenario I: fewer than 100 pre-orders. The campaign was declared failed and pre-orders were refunded. Alternatively, if the author purchased the balance pre-orders, we could still publish under the Starter plan.

Scenario II: between 100 and 200 pre-orders. We published under the Starter plan. The author received 100% profit share for all pre-orders above the 100 pre-order goal.

Scenario III: more than 200 pre-orders. The author could choose Starter or Regular. On Starter, 100% profit share applied above 100 pre-orders. On Regular, 100% profit share applied above 200 pre-orders.

Can I still submit to BooksFundr?
